Hibernian have said they are investigating the incident

Hibernian defender Ryan Porteous was allegedly caught on video as part of a group who were filmed stealing a tribute made by a woman in memory of her mother, who died from dementia.

The 22-year-old defender was supposedly caught on camera as a man entered the garden of the property before taking the homemade wreath.

Porteous and the group he had been with were caught during the early hours of Sunday morning in Dalkeith, Midlothian after Hibs’ 2-0 win against Ross County the previous day.

As reported by the Daily Recordthe homeowner who had made the tribute was able to retrieve it after she posted a picture of Porteous and his friends on social media – leading to people recognising the defender.

Her post read: “Who is this person? He thought it [is] OK to come into my garden … early this morning and steal my wreath. I want it back or I’m going to report you.”

Despite being informed by another local where to find it, the woman found the wreath damaged and also missing her mum’s brooch, which was placed in the centre.

The culprit reportedly then contacted the woman to apologise with one source saying: “It happened about 1.30am on Sunday morning.

“The woman makes a wreath every year in memory of her mum who died from Alzheimer’s disease.

“It’s upsetting that her mum’s brooch is missing. The guy who took it contacted her and apologised and said he’d deliver some flowers.”

After receiving the flowers, the woman later updated the post to say:“I’ve got it back, damaged, and my mother’s brooch missing from the centre.

“This was an Alzheimer’s wreath and that brooch can’t be replaced. The man who took it phoned and said sorry, so I appreciate that.”

Meanwhile, a Hibs spokesperson confirmed that they were investigating the incident. They said: “We are aware of imagery that’s surfaced regarding Ryan Porteous.

“We are looking into it and will remind him of his responsibilities as a high-profile figure at Hibernian FC.”
