Harry Redknapp was the overwhelming favourite for the position amongst fans, media and bookmakers back in 2012 before Hodgson was appointed.
But the former Spurs manager claims he doesn't want the position this time - or rather, he doesn't think he'd have any chance of being offered the role.
'You can count me out,' Redknapp wrote in his Daily Telegraph column. 'I've made it clear how I'd have liked the job in the past but they aren't going to consider me now.'
"He's got passion, enthusiasm, I'll come and work with him all day," Redknapp told BBC Radio 5 live, offering his services as an assistant to Sherwood should he get the nod.
"He's young, enthusiastic, knows the game."Sherwood was sacked as Aston Villa manager last October, with the team 19th in the table and on a six-game losing streak. The 47-year-old had taken Villa to the FA Cup final the previous season, where they lost 4-0 to Arsenal. Redknapp was generally dismissive of a number of candidates, particularly Gary Neville, who worked alongside Hodgson as England coach.
"I'm seeing Gary Neville being made one of the favourites to succeed Hodgson but how the hell can he be considered after the job he did at Valencia? He should be culpable, he has never coached proper players and it would just be jobs for the boys if he was to be appointed."While it could turn out to be a complete and utter mess, to be honest at this stage we think the FA should just go all-in on someone like Sherwood just to see what happens.
