Guimaraes has completed a £75m move to Arsenal from Newcastle United, with the Gunners confirming the signing of the Brazil midfielder on Saturday, two weeks before the new season begins.
The 28-year-old, who has signed a four-year deal with the option of a further year, called the switch one of the “toughest decisions” of his life after four and a half years at St James’ Park. As Arsenal’s newest arrival in this summer’s transfer window, he leaves as the first captain in seven decades to lift a major domestic trophy for Newcastle, having beaten Liverpool in the 2025 Carabao Cup final. Guimaraes said he received a welcome message from midfielder Declan Rice reading: “Come here and please no more fights, now we’re friends” — a nod to his complicated history with the Gunners.
I need a challenge like this. I want to win trophies, I want to make history and I think I’m in the right place to do it. I’m so excited to start.
Newcastle wished the player and his family well, the BBC reported. Arsenal are not expected to stop there, with Mikel Arteta set to chase a new winger and a centre-back before the window shuts, according to the Mirror.
