Government confirms Hillsborough Law to be introduced

Public authorities will be required tell the truth and proactively cooperate with official investigations and inquiries. Failure to do so would then become a criminal offence.

The announcement comes after decades of campaigning by the families of the 97 Liverpool fans who died.

A 'toolkit’ to enforce compliance with the duty will also be supplied which campaigners say would both prevent obfuscation and cover-ups and lead to much more focused and shorter inquiries.

As a result millions of pounds of public money will be saved and justice will be brought much more swiftly to families who deserve to know the truth.
