German foreign office comes out with Brexit banter ahead of Champions League last 16

With three German sides playing English opposition in this season's Champions League round of 16, the German foreign office has done a Brexit banter

This is great banter, it really is

As you will be aware, this week sees the start of the Champions League knockout stages. In the round of 16, there are three clashes between English and German opposition.

Schalke 04 take on Manchester City, Liverpool play Bayern Munich, and Tottenham Hotspur come up against Borussia Dortmund.

England and Germany have had a footballing rivalry for decades, and given the current political climate, it is even more intense right now, while remaining friendly (most of the time.)

With that in mind, the German foreign office decided to indulge in a bit of Brexit banter, tweeting: Dear Brits! We love you and we’re damn sad you want to leave the EU. But in the round of sixteen of the Champions League, we are threefold for a hard Brexit, without a backstop.”

In the words of Alan Partridge: this is great banter, it really is.

Wednesday’s clash between Spurs and Dortmund at Wembley will attract many an England fan, curious to see what Jadon Sancho is all about.

The teenager left Manchester City for first team football in the Bundesliga, a risk that has paid off, as he has fought his way into Lucien Favre’s starting line-up and Gareth Southgate’s England squad.
