Alejandro Garnacho seen asking Cristiano Ronaldo’s permission to use celebration

Garnacho had to ask permission from his idol

Manchester United youngster Alejandro Garnacho was seen asking for Cristiano Ronaldo’s permission before using his celebration after scoring his first senior goal for the club on Thursday.

Garnacho, who has broken into the United first team after a string of standout performances during the club’s victorious FA Youth Cup campaign last season, scored the only goal of the Europa League game away to Real Sociedad on Thursday.

Though it wasn’t enough for United to top their group, it was undoubtedly a special moment for the Madrid-born Argentine.

Garnacho idolised Ronaldo

Prior to joining United, Garnacho had been on the books at Atletico Madrid, but grew up idolising Ronaldo – then of Real Madrid.

Ronaldo assisted Garnacho’s goal in San Sebastián on Thursday, and the 18-year-old was then seen asking Ronaldo if he could use his new celebration. The veteran gave his blessing:

Garnacho represents Argentina

Despite being born and raised in Spain, Garnacho qualifies for Argentina through his mother’s side of the family. He was called up to their senior squad earlier this year, becoming one of the youngest players to count Ronaldo and Lionel Messi as teammates.

United denied top spot

Despite the victory, United finished their group second having lost their first game to La Real at Old Trafford and finished the group with an inferior goal difference.

A win by two clear goals would have seen them overtake them, but United were frustrated as the game progressed, creating next to nothing after half-time.

This means United will face a potentially difficult tie against one of the sides to drop out of the Champions League – which could include Barcelona or Juventus – for a place in the competition’s round of 16.
