Frankie Edgar makes his case to face Conor McGregor for UFC featherweight title

Conor McGregor's surprise defeat at UFC 196 by Nate Diaz on Saturday night was greeted with mirth by many of the Notorious's rivals, but Frankie Edgar is all business. McGregor has spoken of his intent to return to the featherweight division to defend the title he still holds, and Edgar, who was part of the US broadcast team for UFC 196, has long been campaigning for the next shot at the 145lb title. But with former champ Jose Aldo already reigniting his war of words with the Dubliner and vigorously lobbying for a rematch, the American might have his work cut out if he isn't to be squeezed out once again. The former lightweight champion took to Instagram last night to plead his case to be named the challenger, tagging McGregor and UFC bosses Dana White and Lorenzo Fertitta and dismissing Aldo's claims in the process.

"If @thenotoriousmma wants to show character and prove he is a champion he needs fight me, someone who poses a threat to his title not someone he already beat in Jose Aldo," Edgar said.

"No disrespect to Aldo but he had his time. Now it's my turn. @danawhiteufc @lorenzofertitta @ufc"
