Footballer who thanked his wife and girlfriend has made things worse

That's his story and he's sticking to it...

This isn’t helping things.

Mohammed Anas put the ball in the back of the net twice in the South African Premier League last weekend, and then put his foot in his mouth in his post-game interview.

Not literally, of course, because that would be strange, but Anas revealed more than he had intended to when he was presented with the man of the match award.

The Free State Stars striker said:

“Thank you very much for giving me this. And I appreciate my fans, also my wife and my girlfriend…”

Anas realised he had just landed himself in hot water with his wife, and attempted to clarify his comments.

“I mean my wife, sorry to say. I’m sorry, my wife.”

However, it was too late. The clip went viral and Anas would have had some serious explaining to do when he arrived home following Friday’s game.

The Ghanaian is adamant that he merely made a mistake, and has since denied he has a girlfriend.

He has, however, tried to explain his gaffe. While we are, of course, giving him the benefit of the doubt, we doubt many will be convinced by his explanation.

“My family knows that I call my daughter my girlfriend. That’s what I was talking about. I don’t have a girlfriend,” Anas said.

“I love her (his wife) so much. She’s given me two beautiful children. She is fine. She knows what kind of man I am so I am not worried”.

That’s his story and he’s sticking to it.
