Of course it is hugely frustrating to find out that a vital fixture has been postponed with only hours to go until kickoff. Each and every game is a huge logistical endeavour that takes days of planning and the hard work of hundreds of people behind the scenes. And never more so than during a global pandemic. As well as the planning aspect, of course the fans and everyone involved is also looking forward to a game of football.
But these are trying times, and things change quickly. With just over three hours to go until the planned 6pm start, Spurs' final home game of the 2020 calendar year against local rivals Fulham was cancelled. This is due to an outbreak of positive Covid-19 cases in the visiting team's ranks. Jose Mourinho went public with his (understandable) sporting frustration via Instagram, but the football club released a hugely classy statement.
With no hint of annoyance, and plenty of empathy, it reads:
'We can confirm that our Premier League home fixture against Fulham, scheduled to take place this evening (Wednesday 30 December), has been postponed.'The Premier League informed us of the decision this afternoon, with Fulham having requested the postponement on the grounds of the number of COVID-19 positive cases among their players and staff.'Everyone at Tottenham Hotspur sends their best wishes to Fulham for a safe and speedy recovery to all those who are affected.'Details of a new date for the fixture will be confirmed in due course.'
No fuss, no finger-pointing. Just a genuine understanding of the difficult situation the country finds itself in.
