The La Liga title has been decided.

Barcelona’s 4-2 victory away at Deportivo La Coruna – featuring a hat-trick from Lionel Messi – confirmed them as champions of Spain for 2017/18.

Outgoing champions Real Madrid have other things on their mind at this moment in time. Their game at home to Leganes on Saturday fell between Champions League semi-final fixtures with Bayern Munich, and so Zinedine Zidane opted to rest some of his usual stars for the game.

They did, however, manage to record a 2-1 victory, and so keeping alive their hopes of finishing the season as runners up.

Despite this, the game ended in controversy.

With a minimum of two minutes added-on time to be played at the Bernabeu, the referee blew the full-time whistle as the visitors were lining up a shot at goal. Clearly, this didn’t go down too well with their players, who immediately began to protest.

To make matters worse, Brazilian midfielder Gabriel was then shown a red card by the referee for dissent.

Real host Bayern, who recently retained their German title, on Tuesday. They are 2-1 up from the first leg in Bavaria and are hoping to win their third Champions League title in a row.

Their victory over Leganes was enough to keep them in third, finishing the weekend four points ahead of Valencia and four behind city rivals, Atletico Madrid.

Leganes are currently 16th, and although they look relatively safe from the threat of relegation, a point would have made certain of their top flight status for next season.
