Rangnick won’t convince players to stay at Manchester United if they wish to leave

‘Players have to want to play and stay at a big club like Manchester United.’

Ralf Rangnick has said that he won’t convince players to stay at Manchester United, insisting a club of their stature shouldn’t have to encourage people to stay long-term.

It follows after Anthony Martial’s agent recently revealed the Frenchman’s desire to leave Old Trafford in January, citing a lack of game time as the main reason, whilst contract talks with Paul Pogba remain ongoing, who will be in the last six months of his current deal come January.

Several other players’ futures are also in doubt, with Donny van de Beek and Jesse Lingard two others who could potentially leave, and interim boss Rangnick says he won’t be trying to change the minds of those who wish to leave.

“Players have to want to play and stay at a big club like Manchester United,” he told the Daily Mail.

“If a player does not want to play for a club like Manchester United medium or long-term, I don’t think it makes sense to convince him to change his mind.

“I don’t think anyone in the club should try to convince a player to stay.”

Pogba’s future in particular has been the centre of conversation for some time and Rangnick revealed he had spoken to the midfielder following his recent return from Dubai.

Pogba has been recovering from a thigh injury before speaking to Rangnick on Tuesday, however the 63-year-old confirmed that in future, players will use the club’s training facilities to help recover from injury.

He said: “I would not want players to do their rehab abroad or anywhere else, but the decision on Paul was taken before I came.

“I have already spoken to the medical department, and in the future I want players with injuries to stay here.”

Rangnick and United head to Carrow Road on Saturday evening to face Norwich City as they to follow up to their winning start in the Premier League after beating Crystal Palace last weekend.
