Megan Rapinoe's final game as professional footballer didn't quite go to plan after she suffered a heartbreaking injury.
Rapinoe was biding farewell to her career as she prepared to line up for OL Reign against Gotham FC in her final game only to go down in the sixth minute as the result of a suspected achilles injury.
The former USWNT international was then subbed, much to her frustrations, and made her feelings known during the post-match press conference.
"I’m not a religious person or anything and if there was a god, like, this is proof that there isn’t," she told Fox News.
"This is f**ked up. It’s just f**ked up. Six minutes in and I eat my Achilles."
In another piece in the Seattle Times, Rapinoe added that people initially thought she had been fouled to suffer such an injury.
"Obviously, no one was even around me, and I was pressing," she explained.
"That’s what it felt like.
"Just a huge pop and I can’t even feel where the Achilles is, but pretty sure I tore my Achilles.
"The worst possible outcome.
"Thank God I have a f**king deep well of a sense of humor. It’s devastating to go out in a final so early."
The 38-year-old's retirement marks an end to one of the most successful careers in both men's and women's football.
During her time as a player, Rapinoe scored over 100 goals at club and international level as well as collecting a Ballon d'Or Féminin trophy and the 2019 Best FIFA Women's Player.
She also won the women's World Cup twice in 2015 and 2019.
