Martin Skrtel posts cryptic tweet on future as Rangers links take new twist

Is the reunion with Steven Gerrard off?

Steven Gerrard may not be getting the band back together after all.

The instant that Gerrard was announced as new Rangers manager, we saw the Liverpool legend immediately linked with moves for ex-teammates and current Reds youngsters.

Gerrard is reportedly interested in bolstering his attacking options with a loan move for Dominic Solanke while veteran midfielder Lucas Leiva has also been linked with a switch to Ibrox.

Another former teammate of whom Gerrard is very fond is Martin Skrtel and many felt that a reunion between the two in Glasgow made complete sense.

On Tuesday night, Skrtel took to social media with a cryptic post which seemingly saw him pledge his loyalty to current club Fenerbahce.

A fresh update on the potential deal emerged shortly thereafter when Skrtel’s agent Karol Csontó appeared on Slovakian TV station Markíza to claim that preliminary talks had taken place with Gerrard.

Csontó admitted, however, that the parties were nowhere near to an agreement in relation to finances.

He said: “Rangers are interested in Martin. I personally talked to Steven Gerrard about this possibility.

“Martin has sincerely said it would be an honour for him to play under Steven’s direction for three years. There are, however, complex financial matters. They are terribly far apart.”

It comes as no surprise that an agent is holding out for money and perhaps Skrtel was instructed to make it appear as though he was more than happy in Turkey to strengthen his position in negotiations.

What’s very clear is that there’s plenty of legs left in this transfer saga yet.
