Manchester United women’s team set to play their home games at Leigh

Manchester United's women's team are set to play their home fixtures at Leigh Sports Village.

United announced in March that they had submitted an application to the Football Association to establish their first ever professional women’s team in the second tier of the Women’s Super League. Although the announcement made clear the squad would be based at the The Cliff, United's historic training centre in Salford, it did not mention where they intended to play their home fixtures. A source has told JOE that Leigh Sports Village is now expected to play host to United's women's team's games, with discussions between the club and the stadium management already taking place. Situated in Leigh, ten miles west of Manchester, the Sports Village's 12,000 capacity stadium was built ten years ago. The town's professional rugby league side, Leigh Centurions, moved there from their previous home at Hilton Park and United have also used the stadium in recent years as a home ground for their U-23 and U-19 men's teams.   United's application to the FA to launch their women's team is expected to be a formality, with an announcement due at the end of May. Should they be successful, confirmation of their use of Leigh Sports Village is expected to be announced soon after.
