Part of the issue comes from the fact that they have had to consistently rotate the starting centre backs due to injuries and now with both Virgil van Dijk and Ibrahima Konate injured, they are down to the bare bones.
Matip scored an own goal just five minutes in, and Gomez was deemed to be at fault for the second, pushing up too early and leaving space in behind.
In an interview with Gary Neville on The Overlap, Van Dijk told the pundit that Carragher would not start in the current Liverpool team.
"Like the squad or the 11? He wouldn't even make the full squad, or the first 20, he would be in the stands", said van Dijk.
"You have to really think about it, you have two centre backs playing. Hopefully I'm playing and then Joe Gomez now. Then you have Matip and Konate [he wouldn't get ahead of them]. "He played many, many games for Liverpool but I think the modern day game, Matip and Konate would be ahead of him."Whether or not these comments were in Carragher's head while watching Liverpool's poor defensive display today is unknown, but he made his feelings clear on Twitter.
"It’s not too difficult to play Centre Back next to the leader of the back four, judge CB’s when they have to lead themselves. "Shambolic #LFC".https://twitter.com/Carra23/status/1621910608785428483 The former Anfield hero was referring to the fact that Gomez and Matip may look like good players when playing alongside Konate or the Dutch captain, but without them by their sides, their flaws come to the forefront. Mo Salah, Darwin Nunez and Cody Gakpo weren't firing at the other end either, so defensive issues aren't the only concern, especially as the midfield has been cited to be the root problem for some time now. Regardless of what the exact reason is, something needs to change if Jurgen Klopp has any chance of salvaging this season. Related links:
