However, the campaign in South Africa was a complete flop. England limped to a 1-1 draw with the United States in their opening group game, played out a turgid goalless draw with Algeria and recorded a 1-0 victory over Slovenia to advance to the last-16 as runners-up in a group they were meant to comfortably win. Next up was Germany, and a 4-1 hammering. Frank Lampard's shot crossed the line but wasn't awarded as a goal, so the score could have been closer, but the Germans were clearly superior. In the days following the defeat, Sky Sports News caught up with Roy Keane, and a clip has re-emerged of his take on the England squad. Keane, who was managing Ipswich Town at the time, was asked why England's players had failed to replicate their club form for their country. The former Manchester United captain disputed the idea that England's players had been impressive for their clubs in the season before the World Cup. He went through each player in the England team individually and concluded that none of them, apart from James Milner, had played well for their clubs before the tournament. It is vintage Roy Keane.
