Barcelona promptly appealed the decision, and with the outcome still ongoing, Lewandowski was granted a special reprieve so that he was allowed to play in the game on New Year's Eve.
His presence wasn't enough for the three points as Barça were held to a 1-1 draw but Espanyol were left seething and called the decision a "flagrant injustice."
A statement on the club's website said: "RCD Espanyol has filed a complaint with the Royal Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) to challenge the match against FC Barcelona, corresponding to the 15th LaLiga, for improper alignment.
