“I’m just trying to score and thankfully it went in.”
Chelsea’s Cole Palmer delivered a composed explanation for his audacious Panenka penalty in Sunday’s dramatic 4-3 Premier League victory over Tottenham Hotspur.
Trailing 2-0 within 11 minutes, Chelsea mounted a thrilling comeback at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.
Jadon Sancho pulled one back in the 17th minute before Palmer took centre stage in the second half, scoring two penalties and assisting Enzo Fernandez’s strike to seal the win.
Palmer’s standout moment came in the 84th minute when he calmly chipped goalkeeper Fraser Forster with a Panenka penalty to make it 4-2.
Speaking to Sky Sports, Palmer shared his thought process, delivering an ice-cold response.
“When I stepped back and looked at the clock, I thought it’s all frantic, the game’s all over the place.
“I figured the keeper was ready to dive, so I just chipped it. I’m just trying to score, and thankfully it went in.”
When asked about Chelsea’s title hopes, Palmer added:
“We knew with Arsenal and City drawing, we needed to win—and we did.”
Sky Sports pundit Jamie Carragher praised Palmer’s performance, calling him ‘coolness personified’ and highlighting his impact since joining Chelsea.
Chelsea will look to build on their momentum as they face Astana in the UEFA Europa League on Thursday.
