‘Hopefully he won’t drop me’

Cole Palmer has apologised to Mauricio Pochettino following a bizarre incident that involved a water bottle.

The Chelsea youngster was the standout player for the Blues in their 2-2 draw against Arsenal last weekend, scoring a penalty in the first half to give the west London club the lead.

Palmer has been a regular name on the team sheet since making the £40m move from Manchester City in the summer and is touted to be one of Pochettino’s most important players going forward.

But the 21-year-old thought he’d landed himself in trouble after he threw his water bottle in reaction to Arsenal’s equaliser at Stamford Bridge, only for it to hit Pochettino.

Of course, it was nothing more than an accident but Palmer still apologised to his boss and said he hoped that it wouldn’t mean he was relegated to a place on the bench.

Speaking to the Chelsea website, he said: “When they scored their second goal I was getting a drink. I went to throw the bottle away, as you do, but didn’t look.

“I just saw it loop dead slow and hit the gaffer. I said sorry to him and apologised properly after the game. Hopefully he won’t drop me for that!”

Despite scoring the opening goal, Palmer was made to fight for the right to take the spot kick after Raheem Sterling had initially argued that he should take it before Enzo Fernandez intervened and urged Sterling to allow the former to take the penalty.

Thankfully, for his sake, Palmer kept his nerve and proved Fernandez right.
