Brazil could face a points deduction or be forced to play behind closed doors as punishment for the chaotic scenes that marred their game against Argentina.

Kick off was delayed by 30 minutes after a mass brawl broke out between both sets of fans inside the Maracana.

Some players on both teams tried to intervene, including Emi Martinez who slapped a baton out of a police officer’s hands before being restrained by his Argentine teammates.

Brazil’s Football Confederation could now face punishment.

Article 17 of the FIFA disciplinary code states that “hosts clubs and associations are responsible for order and security before, during and after matches,” adding that the host side is “liable for incidents of any kind” that take place.

Globo have now reported that FIFA are set to open an investigation into the events that took place.

Although their disciplinary code doesn’t include any set punishments, Brazil could be hit with anything ranging from a fine to points deduction or even a full stadium closure.

A points deduction would be the worst punishment for the five-time World Cup winners given that they have taken seven points from their opening six games in World Cup qualifying, and sit sixth out of ten teams.

Only six teams qualify from the South American confederation, meaning any loss of points could severely dent their hopes of qualifying for the 2026 World Cup.
