Achraf Hakimi booed by Maccabi Haifa fans after expressing pro-Palestine views

Hakimi has previously supported Palestine

Paris Saint-Germain’s Achraf Hakimi was booed by Maccabi Haifa fans during their Champions League game on Wednesday.

Hakimi was introduced as a substitute in the 83rd minute, replacing Nordi Mukiele, and was jeered by the home supporters in Israel.

The right back has previously expressed his support for Palestine and was spotted cupping his ears in response to the loud boos from the Haifa fans.

Last year the Morocco international tweeted his support for the Palestinian cause after residents from the  Sheikh Jarrah neighbourhood were evicted by the Israeli government.

Hakimi has been subjected to boos in Tel Aviv earlier this year when PSG faced fellow French side FC Nantes in the Trophee des Champions.

In August, tensions between Palestine and Israel heightened after Hamas aimed missiles towards Jerusalem, with Israeli forces responding by launching air strikes on the Gaza Strip in what has been described as the worst bout of violence since 2014.

PSG meanwhile recovered from an early scare to beat Maccabi Haifa 3-1 in their second Champions League group stage game thanks to help from Lionel Messi, Kylian Mbappé and Neymar.

Former QPR midfielder Tjaronn Chery scored with a 24th minute volley to give the hosts a surprise lead and send the home support into raptures.

Messi equalised before half-time and has now scored against 39 different teams in the Champions League. Mbappé then completed the comeback before Neymar ensured Christophe Galtier’s men would return to Paris with three points.
