A statement from the local authorities claimed that as they arrived at the scene, they found the 29-year-old unresponsive on the pitch.

It said: “Officers spoke to witnesses and learned the fight was between two adult soccer teams.

“The fight occurred when the two teams disagreed with a referee’s decision.

“Sanchez was on the field playing soccer for one of the two teams when the fight broke out.

“During the fight, Sanchez was assaulted by multiple assailants.”

An autopsy will be conducted on Tuesday to determine the cause of Sanchez’s death.

Referee in El Salvador died from internal bleeding after being attacked by fans

Last month a referee in El Salvador died from internal bleeding after he had been attacked by players and fans for showing a red card.

Jose Arnaldo Amaya, 63, passed away as a result of the incident. The Salvadoran Football Federation issued a statement condemning the attack on the referee, who had over 20 years of experience as an official.

President of the SFF, Hugo Carillo, also went on national TV to slam those who were involved in the attack on Amaya.

“As a Federation, we repudiate what happened to referee Jose Arnoldo Amaya,’ he told El Tiki Taka.

“And we trust that the authorities can find those responsible for taking the referee’s life.”
