Farcical penalty shootout followed 90 minutes of Manchester United vs. Real Madrid

A shootout that ends 2-1 is not a good shootout.

A 30% penalty conversion rate among 10 players belonging to two of Europe’s biggest teams translates to a lot of spot-kick practice before the season gets underway.

Manchester United played out a 1-1 draw with Real Madrid on Sunday night before a shootout took place in California.

Jesse Lingard opened the scoring following a stunning run from Anthony Martial at the stroke of half-time before Casemiro fired home a penalty in the second half.

With nothing to separate the sides after 90 minutes, the game went to penalties.

And they were not good.

Perhaps it was the temperature that took it out of the 10 players involved or maybe the lack of match fitness finally showed itself on their legs when it came to stepping up from 12 yards.

But the shootout left a lot to be desired.
