While it proved too high a mountain to climb on Sunday night, Iceland did come from behind against England in the last 16 and in light of their hammering at the hands of France, the 2-1 victory reflects even worse on Wayne Rooney and company that it did last Monday night.
It's hardly a surprise that so many seemed keen to heap further misery on England, putting the cap on what has been a miserable week for English fans.
Gary Lineker had his say early on, and it he wasn't alone in drawing parallels between England's poor showing a week ago and France's calm demolition on Sunday night.
