Fans convinced Ronaldo’s Man Utd winner should have been disallowed

Fans convinced Man Utd goal should have been ruled out

It was a dramatic finish to the game at Old Trafford on Wednesday night

Fans have been left questioning whether Cristiano Ronaldo’s late winner against Villarreal on Wednesday (September 29) night should have stood or not – with many wondering whether he should have been ruled out for offside.

United looked set for a disappointing draw at home playing against the Spanish club, until the ball fell to Ronaldo in the box and he did what he does best – putting the ball in the net – to bag his fifth goal for Man Utd since returning to the club in the summer.

But debate has now began over whether Jesse Lingard – who was on the ground in front of goalkeeper Geronimo Rulli – was obstructing the keeper’s view, and therefore offside.

Some fans said Lingard was definitely offside, citing examples from previous games and last season when similar goals had been ruled out.

One fan wrote: “Everton were denied a winner v Man Utd for much the same…”

Another said the goal “should have been ruled out.”

And even goalkeeper Pepe Reina weighed into the debate, saying it was “offside all day long.”

But others were adamant that Rulli’s view was unobstructed, and there was no debate to be had.

One supporter wrote: “Lol you are nuts if you think he interfered with the keeper’s vision.”

Others pointed out that even if the goal had been ruled out, a penalty would likely have been given anyway for a foul on Lingard.

There was a very brief check from VAR over the goal but this came to nothing.
