Ouch, in more ways than one

What hurt more?

It’s impossible to tell whether Strasbourg goalkeeper Alexandre Oukidja will require more attention to his ego or his knee after conceding a late goal to Dimitri Payet in Marseille’s 2-0 victory in Ligue 1 on Tuesday night.

Oukidja had to be substituted in the 89th minute of the game at the Stade Orange Velodrome, having injured himself after falling for a Payet dummy in the box.

The former West Ham midfielder latched on to an incredible pass in a counter attack from the hosts and had several options on.

He could have played in a teammate to slot home into an open goal to Payet’s left, he could have hammered it into the corner when one-on-one with Oukidja or he could have completely embarrassed the shot-stopper.

As it turns out, Payet chose the third option as he feigned to shoot with a motion that forced the ‘keeper to go down.

The 30-year-old then guided the ball around Oukidja and slipped it into an empty net, guaranteeing the victory for Rudi Garcia’s side.

Oukidja clearly injured himself as he went down, with his momentum taking him in one direction before he attempted to follow Payet’s run.

The Strasbourg goalkeeper had to be taken off and was replaced by Landry Bonnefoi with just a minute of regular time remaining.

It remains to be seen how severe the injury is but we wish him a speedy recovery.
