The referee didn't buy it

Hold the front page

Here we go. After a week in which the headlines were dominated by Raheem Sterling and his deeply personal tattoo of an assault rifle on his leg, it seems as though he will be on the back (and possibly front) pages again tomorrow.

Sterling started for England today in their friendly against Nigeria, and played very well in a front two alongside captain Harry Kane. His constant runs in behind were causing all sorts of problems for Nigeria’s defence. The he committed what is considered to be a cardinal sin by many football fans; he tried to win a penalty by initiating contact with the opposition goalkeeper.

The referee did not buy it and cautioned him for simulation. Everybody knew what would be coming in the next few days. That’s right: more negative coverage of Raheem Sterling in the newspapers.
