No this is not an April Fools.
The Hammers currently lie just a few places above the relegation zone, deeply rooted to the bottom of the table. To say this season has been underwhelming would be very generous indeed. High hopes have turned into growing mumbles of discontent as big talk over the summer has resulted in nothing but dross on the pitch.
A move from their beloved Boleyn Ground to London Stadium hasn’t exactly helped spirits, as the famously intimidating West Ham atmosphere has been hit by the arena’s design and the fans’ distance from the pitch. Still there’s plenty of ambitious talk around the club, even if some of it seems rather hollow and verging on the ridiculous.
On Saturday, vice-chairperson Karren Brady made something of an eye-opening admission. She told Sky Sports that the club had attempted to sign Romelu Lukaku from Everton, not once but twice. Alas they have been unsuccessful (no shit Sherlock) because the Premier League’s leading goalscorer wants Champions League football (you don’t say).

This has resulted in two reactions. The first is hilarity, not only from rival fans – and Evertonians in particular – but also from West Ham supporters. The second is resentment that Brady is desperately trying to hoodwink Hammers fans into coughing up for season ticket renewals. The only thing it’s really achieving is making the club into a laughing stock…
