Even Per Mertesacker is poking fun at Arsenal’s inability to sign a striker

Ask Arsenal fans what they'd like from the remainder of this summer's transfer window, and they'd probably all say the same thing: a striker.

In the wake of another failed attempt to land their first league title since 2004, many Arsenal fans would've pinned their hopes on Arsene Wenger finally adding a bit of firepower to his his squad in time for the new campaign. While there's still a good few weeks for him to do so, as things stand the only new additions at The Emirates are a defender (Rob Holding) and a defensive midfielder (Granit Xhaka). With any plans to bring in the Argentine international now dead, a reported move for Alexandre Lacazette could also be scuppered by rumoured interest in the Lyon man from Paris Saint-Germain. But Arsenal fans need not worry. With their lists of potential striking reinforcements becoming shorter by the day, Per Mertesacker has come with some good news. The German defender will be out of action for a while after picking up a knee injury in last week's friendly with Lens and has had surgery to address the damage he's done.
