Former Chelsea team doctor Eva Carneiro has said the “faceless cowards” who sent her death threats after she left the club should face the full force of the law.

Dr Carneiro reached a settlement with the club following a saga which lasted almost the entire length of the 2015/16 season, culminating in Chelsea issuing her an apology after an employment tribunal.

She had been publicly criticised by then-manager José Mourinho after entering the field of play to treat an injured Eden Hazard on the opening day of last season, and left the club mid-season.

It later emerged that the Gibraltar-born doctor had turned down a seven-figure payout before the tribunal, and she has revealed that the last year or so has seen her suffer unwelcome abuse.

“Even though I don’t have a presence on social media – I think I have made one post ever in my life – some of the threats of sexual violence and death threats make it through,” Dr Carneiro told the Daily Telegraph.

“They [the abusers] just seem to be faceless cowards and they should be answerable to legislation.”

She has thanked the Women in Football group, among others, for helping her since the events which led to her constructive dismissal case.

“I had incredible support from day one and I want to thank all the people who approached me and expressed support<” Dr Carneiro said.

“When you are going through an incredibly difficult time that support means a lot. I have to mention the people of Gibraltar because they made me feel a sense of Gibraltar from afar. I have been away for a long time.”

The medical professional, who now has her own consulting rooms in London’s Harley Street, joined Chelsea in 2009 and began working with the first team when André Villas-Boas was manager of the club.
