To amateur golfers out there – there’s hope for us all.
Over at Augusta, former world number one Ernie Els endured a difficult-to-watch first hole, taking six putts (all of a distance of less than three feet) before eventually sinking his ball to record the worst ever score on the first hole in Masters history.
Scoreboards initially showed that the 46-year-old had taken ten shots, only for it to emerge later that he had avoided being only the tenth player to record a double figures score at Augusta.
“I don’t know how I stayed out there,” he explained afterwards. “The last thing you want is to be out on the golf course.
“I’m not sure where I’m going from here. If you have snakes in your brain, it’s difficult. Maybe I need a brain transplant.”
“I can’t explain it. I couldn’t take the putter back. I had three goes and then it went all over the place.
“Something withholds you from doing your normal thing. I could go on the practice putting green and make 20 straight three-footers.”
Anything but straightforward for the man known as The Big Easy.
