How the England Pakistan series was won

Chasing just 130 on the fourth day, England were reduced to 2-2 inside the opening over.

Ben Duckett edged Muhammad Abbas' first ball behind and Emilio Gay was palpably lbw.

It could have been 35-3 when Joe Root dragged Mohammad Ali on to his own stumps on 23, except Ali had overstepped, and Root was reprieved.

From there the captain and Jordan Cox simply took the game away.

The pair put on an unbroken 128, Cox making a composed 59 and Root finishing 62 not out as England won by eight wickets just before lunch on day four to take the series 3-0.

Pakistan were bowled out for 133 in the first innings, Josh Tongue taking 4-42, before England replied with 453, Harry Brook top-scoring with 75, backed by Jamie Smith's 69, Dan Lawrence's 65, Gay's 60 and Ollie Robinson's 50.

Debutant Razaullah took 4-148.

Pakistan's second innings of 449, Masood 95, Babar Azam 76, Razaullah 81, Awais 59, was the only reason the finish got interesting at all.

Cox's second telling contribution of the series strengthens his case for the XI against South Africa in December.

For Root, it completes a successful return to a captaincy he only resumed when Ben Stokes retired in June, and ends one of England's most turbulent summers on a rare uncomplicated note.

Attention now switches formats with England beginning a white-ball series against Sri Lanka in Southampton on Tuesday.
