It’s going to be a massive summer

Women’s football is on the up. This year alone, interest in the sport has accelerated at a rate never seen before. In March, Barclay’s were unveiled as the Women’s Super League’s new sponsor as part of a deal worth £10 million over three seasons. The Women’s FA Cup final was attended by more than 43,000 people. And this summer, the Women’s World Cup will be held in France, which should propel the sport into a new sphere of appreciation.

England are one of the favourites, which has helped ramp up the hype levels on these shores ahead of the tournament. Today marked the Lionesses’ World Cup squad announcement, and the FA have done it in a way never seen before in the format of a genius Twitter threat.

Each player selected to be part of the squad was informed by a celebrity via videos on Twitter. Those involved in the announcement included James Corden, former Arsenal defender and TV pundit Alex Scott, Radio 1’s Greg James and Raheem Sterling. Watch the announcement videos and see the full squad below.

The full England squad for this summer’s World Cup in France is as follows:

GK: Karen Bardsley, Mary Earps, Carly Telford.

DEF: Millie Bright, Lucy Bronze, Rachel Daly, Alex Greenwood, Steph Houghton, Abbie McManus, Demi Stokes, Leah Williamson.

MID: Karen Carney, Jade Moore, Jill Scott, Lucy Staniforth, Georgia Stanway, Keira Walsh.

If this video doesn’t get you excited for the tournament, I don’t know what will.
