Eddie Howe is leaving Newcastle United with immediate effect, sources have told BBC Sport. The exit brings an end to close to five years at St James' Park for the 48-year-old, who joined in November 2021 a month after the Saudi Public Investment Fund completed its takeover of the club.
Eddie Howe came under mounting pressure last season as Newcastle finished 12th in the Premier League, losing 17 of their 38 games. His final match in charge was a 4-1 defeat by Bristol City in a pre-season friendly on Wednesday. Well-placed sources indicated a measure of surprise from Howe at the club's transfer dealings so far this summer, though he was aware of the need to sell players before buying. Earlier this year, the former Bournemouth boss had decided to stay at St James' Park regardless of the inevitability of sales, but his perspective is understood to have shifted over the course of the summer.
As recently as March, Newcastle chief executive David Hopkinson had played down speculation about a change in the dugout, insisting the club were not weighing up a new manager.
We are not having those conversations at the moment.
Matthias Jaissle, currently manager of Saudi Pro League side Al-Ahli, is expected to be appointed as Howe's successor.
