Diego Forlan: ‘Jose Mourinho is the man for Man United’

Nooruddean Choudry

At last a former Man United player has put his head above the parapet.

You’ve probably noticed that most Old Trafford alumni fall into two distinct but very conservative camps: those who stress Louis van Gaal needs to be given more time, and those who pledge allegiance to Ryan Giggs.

These may be their genuine opinions and you’ve got to respect that, but it seems very much as though they are coloured with a level of bias. The former group tend to be club ‘ambassadors’, whilst the latter are often former teammates and friends of Giggs.

Perhaps neither are a true reflection of how United supporters actually feel, who are sick of the manager and somewhat wary of his assistant coach. The majority of polls on the subject have Jose Mourinho as the preferred choice.

Uruguayan Diego Forlan, a cult figure at the club despite his somewhat mixed career at Old Trafford between 2002 and 2004, has finally said what everyone is thinking and put his backing behind the jobless Portuguese.

You can read the full 888sport interview with Forlan here, as he chats exclusively about Fernando Torres and the return leg of Atletico Madrid v Barcelona, in addition to his former club United.

And when asked about the best man for the Old Trafford hotseat, the 36-year-old Penarol forward was frank:

“I think with what they have gone through in the past two years [Manchester] United would be better to have a coach with [Jose] Mourinho’s experience,” he said.

Maybe this will encourage others to speak their minds…or perhaps not.
