David De Gea didn’t seem to appreciate Noel Gallagher’s Man United joke, Mo Salah did

Simon Lloyd

Noel Gallagher couldn’t resist…

The Manchester City supporter was in attendance at FIFA’s The Best Awards on Monday evening. As well as performing Don’t Look Back In Anger, the former Oasis member also presented the best goal award.

Joining Didier Drogba on stage at the ceremony in London, Gallagher used the opportunity to make a joke at the expense of City’s neighbours, Manchester United.

“It’s great to be in the room with some of the greatest footballers known to man,” he said, “And of course a few Man United players too.”

Although nothing more than a lighthearted joke, it appeared United goalkeeper David De Gea didn’t see the funny side. The Spanish international, named in the FIFPro World XI, failed to muster a smile when the cameras picked him out in the audience straight after Gallagher’s quip.

As the tweet above points out, Gallagher’s joke did seem to be appreciated by Liverpool’s Mo Salah, the Egyptian international seen laughing at the remark.

Salah was named as the surprise winner of the Puskas Award at the ceremony, though missed out to Real Madrid’s Luka Modric for the award for the best male player. Inexplicably, the former Roma and Chelsea player was not in the FIFPro World XI.

De Gea was in goal for United as they dropped more points at the weekend, drawing 1-1 with newly promoted Wolverhampton Wanderers. Having also lost consecutive games to Brighton and Tottenham earlier in the season, they are currently eight points behind Mo Salah’s Liverpool, who sit top of the Premier League table having won all of their opening games.

Reigning champions City have only failed to win one of their opening games – also against Wolves – and are two points behind Liverpool in second. The two sides will meet for the first time this season at Anfield on October 7.
