Next up: Shannon Briggs

David Haye made light work of Arnold Gjergjaj to continue his quest towards another heavyweight title chance.

Swiss opponent Gjergjaj had been undefeated going into the bout at London’s O2 Arena, but barely threw a punch in anger as Haye sent him to the ground several times.

Referee Terry O’Connor stopped the bout one minute and 35 seconds into the second round, sealing the 35-year-old’s 28th career victory and 26th by KO.

It’s the 18th time Haye has secured a knockout within three rounds, and was almost as quick as his 131-second stoppage of Mark de Mori earlier this year.

Haye will now take on Shannon Briggs in September, after the American former heavyweight champ got the better of Emilio Ezequiel Zarate in the first round earlier in the night.

Haye, who sent Gjergjaj to the ground within 40 seconds, was utterly dominant throughout.

And after a flurry of punches midway through the second round, O’Connor drew the fight to a close.

Haye told JOE before the fight that he wanted a meeting with Anthony Joshua in 2017, providing he keeps winning, and he’s still on course for that.

After his victory, Haye told reporters: “I will get the heavyweight title again and I will bring it back here.”
