David de Gea makes sloppy error and nobody can believe their eyes

So unlike him

Darragh Murphy

You don’t see that every day.

David de Gea makes so few mistakes that even a slight blunder in a meaningless international friendly makes headlines.

For several years now, De Gea has proven himself to be a pillar of reliability for both club and country but it turns out he is actually human after all.

Spain played out a 1-1 draw with Switzerland on Sunday night and De Gea will have to hold his hands up for the equalising goal.

After Alvaro Odriozola opened the scoring for the hosts, Ricardo Rodriguez was gifted a tap-in after the Spanish goalkeeper failed to properly deal with a tame effort from Juventus’ Stephan Lichtsteiner.

Rather than keep hold of the ball or parry it to safety, De Gea instead fumbled it right into the path of the onrushing Rodriguez, who will never score an easier goal in his life.

Spain have one more warm-up game ahead of the World Cup and they will take on Tunisia this Saturday before they travel to Russia for group games against Portugal, Morocco and Iran.

To be fair, there is no danger of De Gea losing his place as Spain’s number one due to his error this weekend and, given the law of averages, it could be several years before he drops another clanger.

The reaction from those watching the game tells you just how rare a De Gea mistake is.
