Danny Drinkwater reacts as he’s cut from England’s Euro 2016 squad

Not such a refreshing change

So now we know.

The final cuts have been made and the 23-man England squad that will almost certainly waltz its way to European glory this summer has been announced.

After spending the Bank Holiday weekend debating with our mates who out of the inexperienced Marcus Rashford and the constantly injured Daniel Sturridge was most deserving of a seat on the plane to France, Roy Hodgson goes and gives them *both* a spot in his squad.

On the flip side, we’ve also learned that Newcastle United’s Andros Townsend and Leicester City’s Danny Drinkwater won’t be making the trip to France.

While there won’t be too many people surprised to learn that Townsend hasn’t forced his way in to the final 23, dropping Drinkwater – a key player in Leicester’s title charge – has generated raised eyebrows aplenty. The return to (something resembling) fitness of Arsenal’s Jack Wilshere appears to have prompted Hodgson to drop the midfielder, who was quick to share his feelings about missing out in the Instagram post below.

As is often the case with footballers these days, Drinkwater’s reaction to the news is a dignified one, expressing his disappointment and wishing the squad the best of luck in the weeks ahead.
