Crystal Palace have been suspended from playing in next season’s Europa League following a breach of Uefa’s strict multi-club ownership rules, per The BBC.
Crystal Palace and Ligue 1 club Lyon are owned, at least in part, by Eagle Football Holdings — under American businessman John Textor— and according to Uefa’s strict multi-club ownership rules it is forbidden for two teams with the same owner to compete in European competitions.
The Eagles had argued that despite John Textor’s significant financial investments in the club, he did not hold any decisive influence at the club. This defence has been rejected by Europe’s governing body.
Crystal Palace were almost handed a lifeline earlier this month as Lyon were provisionally relegated from the French first division last season. If upheld, the relegation would've seen Lyon cede from their position in the Europa League, paving the way for Palace to qualify.
However the seven-time French champions won an appeal against their relegation earlier this week, leaving the question of Palace's position in the tournament up to Uefa.
Palace will be demoted to Uefa’s third-tier competition The Conference League.
Their place will be taken by fellow Premier League side Nottingham Forest who finished 7th last season.
