Conor McGregor’s next mission is to “send a reminder” to the featherweight division

Conor McGregor might have lost his first fight in the UFC but he's still wearing the featherweight strap.

And as he dissected his defeat by Nate Diaz, the Dubliner confirmed his next plan is to drop back down to 145lbs and defend the title he won against Jose Aldo at UFC 189, either in a rematch against the Brazilian or against American contender Frankie Edgar.

"I know there's a lot of people celebrating this in the featherweight division," McGregor said. "At the end of the day I am the featherweight world champion and I feel it is right to back down and remind them of what I achieved and what I did to that division."

McGregor had been due to challenge Rafael dos Anjos at lightweight and ended up fighting Diaz at welterweight, and the Notorious insisted that whatever happened next, both divisions remain on his radar.

"I am not forgetting about the 155lb division, I am certainly not forgetting about the 170lb division," he added. "I think with a bit of adjustment and the recognition that the heavier man can take, that it must take more than one, more than two, more than three to put the heavier man away. I think if I go into it with that mindset at a heavier weight I will do fine again. "I think next, is probably to go back down and defend my featherweight crown."
