Financial woes mean the Lancashire club cannot afford to offer the Nigeria international a new deal, but he has found the noblest of solutions.
Ameobi has offered to play for free in an effort to help Bolton climb away from danger at the foot of the Championship table.
But sadly an embargo on registering new players means they are unable to renew the deal.
The club is in deep trouble, but at least they have one man fighting for them.
