Chris Sutton’s attempt at trolling Rangers supporter could definitely have gone better

Wrong club there

It’s been over a decade since Chris Sutton pulled on a Celtic jersey but don’t be fooled, his hatred for Rangers is as real as ever.

Sutton has dedicated himself to trying to wind up fans of Celtic’s arch-rivals at every possible opportunity.

When he’s celebrating the Hoops’ trophies, he mentions Rangers. When Celtic are drawn against their Glasgow foes in cup competitions, it makes Sutton’s day. The former forward even loves it when others get in on the act of Rangers bashing.

But sometimes Sutton is so eager to get a sneaky dig in on the Gers that he fails to put in the appropriate research, which is precisely what happened this week.

Seeing as it’s that time of the year when the PFA Team of the Year is named, Sutton offered his two cents as he tends to do.

The 44-year-old suggested that Southampton defender Virgil van Dijk, formerly of Celtic, ought to make the XI. But when one Rangers fan reminded Sutton that van Dijk hadn’t played enough games this season to really be in contention, Sutton fired back.

Sutton’s jibe about Rangers failing to sign Joleon Lescott had one little problem contained within.

As he joked that Lescott opted to travel all the way to Greece to play for Olympiakos over Rangers, he actually named the wrong Greek club as it was AEK Athens, not Olympiakos, that Lescott signed for in 2016.

Luckily, none of his followers noticed it…
