Chelsea’s press officer stepped in to stop Pulisic from answering the question
Chelsea intervened to stop Christian Pulisic from answering a question on gun control during their pre-season tour of the United States.
The topic has recently become a major talking point in America following a spate of mass shootings in the country. Several sporting figures there – perhaps most movingly Golden State Warriors coach Steve Kerr – have spoken openly to the media about it.
Pulisic was one of a group of US internationals who recently signed an open letter to Congress, urging them to pass stricter legislation on gun control. This followed shootings in a school in Uvalde, Texas, and at a supermarket in Buffalo, New York.
On Sunday, three people were killed and two injured when a gunman opened fire in a shopping mall in Indiana.
Two days on, Pulisic was given the opportunity to add his voice to the discussion during a press conference held via video call.
The 23-year-old’s reaction suggested he was reluctant to answer the question. At that moment, a press officer from the club informed reporters that Pulisic would not be responding to the question.
“That isn’t the sort of question to answer in this press conference today,” the press officer can be heard saying in the video below.
