Chelsea assistant coach Marco Ianni has been charged with improper conduct by the Football Association after his involvement in a touchline fracas after Ross Barkley's late equaliser for Chelsea against Manchester United at the weekend. José Mourinho, meanwhile, will not face any punishment for his part in the affair.
Ianni appeared to provoke the Manchester United dugout as he celebrated the goal, which sparked a response from Mourinho, who chased Ianni but was restrained by stewards.
Chelsea manager Maurizio Sarri apologised immediately after the incident to Mourinho, who accepted his apology, admitting that he too had taken celebrations too far in the past.
An FA statement on Monday read: “Chelsea coach Marco Ianni has been charged following the game against Manchester United on Saturday [20 October 2018].
“It is alleged that his behaviour in the 96th minute constituted improper conduct. He has until 6pm on Thursday 25 October 2018 to respond to the charge.”
Adding on Mourinho, the FA said: “In relation to this incident, José Mourinho has been formally reminded of his responsibilities whilst both clubs have received similar official reminders in terms of the behaviour expected of their staff and players at all times whilst in the technical area.”
