A Charlton Athletic fan has died after having a medical emergency during a Championship match on Saturday, as reported by Sky News.
The news of the fan's death has been confirmed by the club in a statement that reads: "Charlton Athletic are devastated to report that a supporter has passed away following a medical emergency at The Valley today
"Everyone at the club sends their heartfelt condolences to the supporter’s family and friends at this incredibly difficult time."
The tragic news of the fan's passing comes after earlier reports that the Championship fixture between Charlton and Portsmouth was abandoned in the 15th minute.
Charlton Athletic kicked off their home match with Portsmouth at 12.30pm on Saturday, but play had to be suspended from the 12th minute when the fan suffered "a medical emergency" in the stands.
Play was then halted for the next 5 minutes to allow the supporter, who has so far not been named, to receive treatment.
Following those five minutes, players from both teams were then seen leaving the pitch in order to allow for further treatment to the fan to take place.
A further 45 minute suspension of play followed, while officials came to their final decision on whether the game should be abandoned.
Finally, an announcement was made that the players would not return to the field to resume the game.
Per The Mirror's report, attention was brought to the fan's medical issue after other supporters in attendance alerted stewards in the ground.
The fan was then placed in a stretcher and taken to a place of privacy and safety to allow for treatment, scenes of their departure were reportedly applauded warmly by both sets of supporters.
An official statement has been made by Charlton that sums up the reasons behind the suspension of play in the match.
It begins:"Due to a medical emergency in the crowd, today’s match has been abandoned.
"We thank you for your patience and understanding. Everyone at the club sends their best wishes to the supporter affected and thank our medical team and first responders.
"Information on when the match will be rescheduled will be announced in due course."
