The Saints have sounded out their successor.
Southampton have identified a prime target to become Russell Martin’s successor following his sacking last night.
The news that Martin had been relieved of his duties was confirmed in a club statement late last evening after a 5-0 defeat courtesy of Tottenham Hotspur.
5-0 down at half-time, it leaves the recently promoted club rooted to the bottom of the table with five points on the board.
Nine points behind Leicester City in 17th, it is going to require a big effort to save the Saints from the drop.
However, the South Coast club have sounded out a main successor as per numerous reports – Sheffield Wednesday’s Danny Rohl.
Already establishing a great reputation in the Steel City, Rohl’s work in Sheffield has been sensational so far.
Last season, he saved the club from the drop comfortably after taking over with the club looking destined for relegation back to League 1.
This season, The Owls sit in a brilliant 9th position in the league – just five points off the play-off places.
It is understood that Rohl is one of the ‘leading candidates’ for Southampton, with concrete talks ongoing.
