The Champions League Final could be moved for the fourth year in a row.
Turkey is set to host this year’s grand finale at the Ataturk Stadium in Istanbul but according to The Independent, that could now change due to the ongoing political unrest in the country.
Having failed to stage the final on two previous occasions, both due to covid restrictions in 2020 and 202, Turkey are hoping they will be able to stage their first Champions League Final since Liverpool’s famous comeback against AC Milan to win on penalties in 2005.
UEFA have “sufficient concerns” ahead of the upcoming presidential elections that are due to take place next month in the country.
As a result, the European football governing body have a contingency plan in place but may have to wait until after the semi finals (which will be finished on May 17) to confirm their final decision.
Last year the final was supposed to be held in St. Petersburg, Russia but after the country’s invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, UEFA made the decision to strip them of the final and host it at the Stade de France in Paris.
Real Madrid went on to win the tournament for the 14th time last season, beating Liverpool who were going in search of winning a famous treble only to fall short at the last hurdle.
