Cameroon’s Onguene throws away water given to her by Dutch sub

Cameroon lost 3-1 to the Netherlands on Saturday

Cameroon’s Gabrielle Aboudi Onguene had an eventful afternoon against the Netherlands on Saturday.

Not only did she become her country’s first scorer at the 2019 World Cup, she was also at the centre of a bizarre incident which angered those on the Dutch bench, moments before her goal.

The ball out of play as the game neared half-time, Onguene can be seen asking the Dutch team for a drink of their water.

Desiree van Lunteren, who can be seen in the video wearing Netherlands’ number two shirt, either appears not to understand her opponent’s request or just flatly rejects it.

Seeing this, Merel van Dongen leaves the bench to offer Onguene another bottle of water. She takes the bottle, but  – perhaps angered by the earlier rejection – instantly tosses it away, much to the bemusement of those close by.

This is why Dutch fans were booing Onguene from r/soccer

At this point, Cameroon had just fallen behind to an opener from Arsenal’s Vivianne Miedema.

Though Onguene equalised before half-time, the Dutch restored their lead through Dominique Bloodworth shortly after the interval.

Miedema scored again to complete a 3-1 for the Netherlands. In doing so, the 22-year-old brought up her 60th goal for her country in just 77 appearances – enough to eclipse Manon Melis’ record.
