Burnley have confirmed that a fan was removed from the ground during their defeat to Manchester City after Rico Lewis was struck by an object.

Lewis fell to the floor in the first half after being struck by a lighter and the Lancashire club have confirmed that the individual was removed from the ground.

They said: “We are aware of an incident that happened in the first half of the match where a missile was thrown at Manchester City player Rico Lewis. This is unacceptable. The person responsible has been identified and removed from the ground by the police. Any individual found guilty of throwing missiles within the stadium will receive a banning order.”

The second half of the game was also briefly stopped after a fan attempted to run onto the pitch from the home end.

As for matters on the pitch it was a comfortable night for the reigning champions as an Erling Haaland brace and Rodri effort in the second half ensured they started off their title defence with a win.

Haaland was quickest to react to Rodri’s knockdown into the box following an early Man City corner before doubling his and City’s tally with an acrobatic finish before the break.

Rodri made sure of the points with a thunderous effort from close range as Vincent Kompany and the Clarets were given a difficult start to life back in the Premier League.

Anass Zaroury was also sent off in the closing stages for a poorly-timed challenge on Kyle Walker.

The only downside for Pep Guardiola on the night was Kevin De Bruyne having to be substituted off in the first half due to an injury concern.
